Club Report (March 2023)

Our guest speakers for our February Dinner Meeting were Jonathan Robran, CEO of Operation Flinders, and Colin Cordon, who is a volunteer for this programme and assists our club as a volunteer at our Bargain Centre.

The presentation gave members the opportunity to hear of the work of this organisation and provided an insight into the possibility of our club sponsoring a participant in the programme.

Our club Aged Care Digital Image Project formed the focus of discussion at our Business Meeting. We need to look into the future as Lion John Dunn, our long-term convenor of this project, has indicated at age 85 that he intends to step back from coordinating this project in the coming months.

We congratulate John on this service project that has seen residents of some 200 aged care facilities benefit from packages that have been developed.

This is an opportunity for other clubs to look at how this project can be adapted to help those elderly in their community reminisce using photos of their past scanned onto a memory stick…. a service.

If you have elderly family members you could start by gathering your family photos of past times and, using a scanner (Burnside Club can provide), collate these onto a stick to then sit together and watch how lives have changed…. this is known to be of great value to all as we age.
The Adelaide Italian Club has already taken the initiative in this regard…. they invited Vice President Mike to address their dinner meeting on this subject. As a result of discussion and follow up with 3 of their members they indicated the wish to collect family photos from extended family members, to have them scanned and subsequently then be available to relatives in Residential Aged Care Facilities.

For notice to all who may be contemplating a visit to Burnside Club meetings; we have been advised that The Arkaba will be closed for renovations from April through to next year.

Consequently, our Business Meetings will now be held at our Bargain Centre, Glebe Rd., Glen Osmond on the second Tuesday of each month commencing at 1.30. Our April Dinner Meeting will be held at The Robin Hood Hotel on Monday 24th April from 6.30….. guest speaker will be from The Arthritis Foundation The venue for our May meeting is yet to be finalised. Our Handover Dinner will be held at The Maylands Hotel on Tuesday, 27th June.

Once again, members have been very active in this month providing 378 hours of service. On top of this, we had 41 hours served by volunteers making a total of 419 hours. This is made up from hours at Bargain Centre, LEHP testing, Aged Care scanning, collection of stamps and glasses plus attendance at meetings and administration.

The Bargain Centre generated an income of $2400 for the month. A donation of $2,000 of this was made to The Lions Club of Mannum to support them in flood recovery.
